Boiler grants in Ireland, 2026

There is no grant for a new gas or oil boiler. What is funded: €700 for heating controls, and up to €14,500 for a house that switches to a heat pump.

Figures checked against citizensinformation.ie and seai.ie on 28 October 2026.

There is no grant for replacing a gas or oil boiler with a new gas or oil boiler. Citizens Information says it plainly: "The Better Energy Homes Scheme does not cover replacing a gas or oil boiler with a new gas or oil boiler."

Two grants can still matter: the €700 heating controls grant if you keep a boiler, and up to €14,500 for a house if you switch to a heat pump. You can't have both.

New gas boiler: no grant

Nothing in SEAI's home energy grants pays towards a new gas or oil boiler. That's true for a like-for-like swap and for a switch to a combi. Be wary of any offer that calls a new gas boiler "grant-aided". Ask which grant, and check it on seai.ie.

Heating controls: €700

SEAI pays €700 towards upgrading the controls on your existing heating system, whatever the type of home (SEAI, checked October 2026). The rules:

  • The home has an MPRN and was built and occupied before 2011
  • An SEAI-registered contractor does the work
  • Grant approval comes before any work starts
  • Not available if you are applying for, or have claimed, a heat pump grant

Heating controls are things like zoned heating, room thermostats and timers. Ask your installer if they are SEAI-registered for heating controls, and get the grant approved before they start.

Switching to a heat pump: up to €14,500 for a house

From 6 October 2026, a €2,000 boiler scrappage grant is paid when you scrap a fossil fuel heating system and replace it with a heat pump. If SEAI is already processing your heat pump application, you get it automatically (Citizens Information, page edited 22 October 2026, checked 28 October 2026). Here is how it adds up for a house:

GrantAmount
Heat pump (house, all types except air to air)€6,500
Renewable heat bonus€4,000
Central heating upgrades, like new radiators€2,000
Boiler scrappage (oil or gas boiler removed)€2,000
Total for a house€14,500
Technical assessment (separate, before you apply)€200

Source: Citizens Information, page edited 22 October 2026, checked 28 October 2026. Apartments get a lower heat pump grant. Check seai.ie for the current rules before you apply.

The home must have been built and occupied before 2021 for the heat pump grant. Homes built before 2007 need a technical assessment first, unless a valid BER shows a Heat Loss Indicator of 2.3 or less (SEAI, checked October 2026).

Watch the order of things

For any SEAI grant, the approval must come before the work. Work started before approval isn't funded. And because the heating controls grant isn't available with a heat pump grant, decide which way you're going before you claim either.
