Oil boiler replacement in Dublin: the short answer
- Installed oil boiler prices published by a Dublin firm: €3,000 to €4,200 including installation and VAT, with heating controls and a 2-year parts and labour warranty (DeWAR, read 29 October 2026).
- Stillorgan Gas says an oil boiler replacement "would start at €2,700" supplied and fitted (VAT not stated).
- No SEAI grant for a new oil boiler. Since 1 January 2025 the council's Housing Aid for Older People grant can't buy one either.
- Oil work is done by an OFTEC-registered technician, not an RGI. Earth bonding to I.S. 813, if needed, is €350 extra at DeWAR.
- About one Dublin home in eleven (9%) heats with oil, mostly in north County Dublin and the older south Dublin suburbs (Census 2022).

Source: DeWAR Gas & Oil Service, read 29 October 2026. If earth bonding is needed to bring the installation up to I.S. 813, DeWAR adds a flat €350 for up to 10 metres. Stillorgan Gas gives "the rough cost for an oil boiler replacement would start at €2,700 (supplied & fitted). This differs from house to house" (Stillorgan Gas, read 29 October 2026; VAT not stated).
What moves the price
- Inside or outside. On DeWAR's list the external version of the same output costs €400 to €600 more than the boiler-house version. An outdoor boiler in a weatherproof casing frees the space inside and keeps the oil smell out of the house.
- Output. A 15–20 kW boiler suits a small house with one bathroom. Bigger houses and more radiators need 26–35 kW, which costs €400 more on the same range.
- The tank. A rusting or bulging oil tank, or one that doesn't meet current rules on its base and its distance from the house, is a separate cost. Ask the technician to look at it on the survey.
- Earth bonding and the flue. Older installations may need the pipework bonded and the flue replaced. DeWAR prices the bonding; a new flue is quoted on the day.
- Oil combi. An oil combi, which heats water on demand without a cylinder, sits at the top of the oil range. Our sister site lists oil combi prices from installers around Ireland: oil combi boilers.
Who does the work: OFTEC, not RGI
Oil boilers aren't gas work, so the RGI register doesn't apply. The registration body for oil heating technicians is OFTEC (oftec.org). Ask the technician for their OFTEC number, and ask for the commissioning paperwork when the boiler is in. We pass oil requests to an OFTEC-registered technician who covers your area.
Grants: none for an oil boiler
Citizens Information's Better Energy Homes page says it plainly: "The Better Energy Homes Scheme does not cover replacing a gas or oil boiler with a new gas or oil boiler." (Citizens Information, page edited 22 October 2026, checked 29 October 2026). The €700 heating controls grant can still apply to a home built and occupied before 2011, and DeWAR's packages include controls, so ask whether the controls fitted would qualify.
Older homeowners should know one more change. Since 1 January 2025, the council's Housing Aid for Older People grant "cannot" be used "to buy a new fossil fuel boiler, such as an oil or gas boiler", though it can still fund a repair to an existing one, new radiators, pipework or an oil tank, or a second-hand boiler fitted by a qualified contractor (Citizens Information, Housing Aid for Older People, page edited 17 June 2026).
The big money is for leaving oil. Scrap the oil boiler for a heat pump and SEAI pays up to €14,500 for a house, including the €2,000 boiler scrappage grant. See boiler grants and gas boiler or heat pump, which applies just as much to oil.
Oil or gas, if the main is at the gate
Where the gas network runs past the house, a switch from oil to gas is possible, but it needs a gas connection first and then an RGI for the boiler. On SEAI's fuel price comparison for 1 July 2026, kerosene was 12.6 cent per kWh delivered on schedule prices, or 11.72 cent at a typical discounted price, against 16.41 cent for natural gas on the smallest domestic band and 13.0 cent on the next band up, all including VAT (SEAI Domestic Fuels comparison, read 29 October 2026). Standing charges and the connection cost sit on top. Use the price check on this page for a gas price, and ask an OFTEC technician for the oil one, then compare the two. Our sister site turns the gas unit price into a cost per shower and per year: combi boiler running costs.
Where oil homes are in Dublin
In the 2022 Census, 9% of Dublin households heated with oil against 66% with gas. The five local areas with the highest oil shares were Rush–Lusk (28%), Balbriggan (19%), Rathfarnham–Templeogue (18%), Tallaght Central (17%) and Howth–Malahide (17%) (CSO Census 2022, Small Area Population Statistics, local electoral areas, table 6.2). For a yearly oil service rather than a new boiler, our sister site books OFTEC technicians across those areas: oil boiler service in Dublin.

Questions people ask
How much does an oil boiler replacement cost in Dublin?
DeWAR Gas & Oil Service publishes installed oil boiler packages from €3,000 to €4,200 including VAT, with heating controls and a 2-year warranty. Stillorgan Gas says a replacement starts at about €2,700 supplied and fitted, VAT not stated.
Is there a grant for a new oil boiler in Ireland?
No. The Better Energy Homes Scheme doesn't cover replacing an oil boiler with a new oil boiler, and since 1 January 2025 the council's Housing Aid for Older People grant can't buy one either. Switching to a heat pump gets up to €14,500 for a house.
Who can install an oil boiler?
An OFTEC-registered technician. Oil isn't gas work, so the RGI register doesn't apply. Ask for the OFTEC number and the commissioning paperwork.
Is an outdoor oil boiler dearer?
On DeWAR's list, yes: the external version of the same output costs €400 to €600 more. It frees the space inside and keeps the oil smell out.
Should I switch from oil to gas?
Only if the gas main runs past the house, and after pricing the connection. On SEAI's 1 July 2026 comparison, kerosene was 12.6 cent per kWh on schedule prices against 16.41 cent for gas on the smallest domestic band, before standing charges.
Does the price include VAT?
DeWAR's packages say 'incl. Installation & VAT'. Stillorgan Gas's figure doesn't say. Ask for a written price with VAT stated.
